Headless Shopify: When It Is Worth the Extra Surface Area

Storefronts that need custom checkout UX, B2B price lists, or sub-second PDPs — and the ones that should stay on Online Store 2.0.

Hydrogen is not a default

We only recommend a headless Shopify build when the theme cannot express the merchandising or B2B rules the business already has. Custom account portals, market-specific catalogs, and content-heavy PDPs are the usual triggers.

The cost is real: you now own caching, preview, and checkout edge cases. We budget a storefront team and a Shopify admin owner, not a single contractor.

Signals it is the right call

  • Theme liquid is already a pile of conditionals per market.
  • Marketing wants a Next.js content site glued to product data.
  • Core Web Vitals on collection pages will not recover on the theme.
